"Caged Bird", Chapter 11.

The wedding was a small affair.  A Saiyajin wedding ceremony consisted of a short ritual witnessed by the kin of the bride and groom, with no authority needed to preside over the event.  An Amon wedding, on the other hand, needed a priest or priestess as a witness, but Nenais'u figured that she herself qualified as such.  After much discussion with the Saiyajin, a ceremony that pleased everyone was decided upon, and a date set.

The setting was an old, crumbled stone ruin on the surface of the planet that Nenais'u and Taurus had found several months ago.  It appeared to be an ancient palace, with several floors and various out-buildings.  The stones had long since been conquered by the pervasive forest, but the top floor of the main building rose above the canopy, and was open to the sky.  Both of the small moons had risen, and their light cast strange double shadows.

Vejiita wore his full royal regalia, with the insignia of his family embossed on his chest plate, and a full dark blue cloak.  he was attended by Nappa and Raditz.

While Vejiita looked regal and imposing, Nenai looked ethereally beautiful.  Her long hair, unbound, spilled about her like an inky cloud.  She was crowned with a circlet of leaves and flowers, and Vejiita's necklace lay at her throat.  The dress she wore was of diaphanous violet silk, and it left very little to the imagination.  She held a single red flower as Taurus and Kariifuuru escorted her to the dais where Vejiita waited.

The King of the Saiyajin looked at his bride with a little awe, running through his vows in his head quickly.  He had gone into battles with less apprehension than this.  War is simple: kill or be killed.  This...this is something unknown.

The new Queen of the Saiyajin--an alien!  He smiled briefly.  His father, and his most fanatical supporters, would be gnashing their teeth in the afterlife.

Vejiita cleared his throat as Nenai came to stand with him.  The other Saiyajin stood behind the two of them in respectful silence.  Nenai smiled at him softly as he took her right hand, took a deep breath, and began.

"In blood we are born, in blood we will die.  Blood is life.  To you, for whom I was born..." he looked at Nenai for a moment, knowing how truly he spoke, "and for whom I will die, I offer my life."  He drew off the white glove from his right hand and dropped it to the ground, taking Nenai's thorned flower.

"By blood I shall know you; by blood shall you know me.  To you, for whom I was born, and for whom I will die, I offer my love in my life's blood."  Nenai held the flower with Vejiita, and then they each pressed their right thumb onto a thorn, drawing twin pearls of bright blood.

"With this blood, I join my life to yours."  The two pressed their thumbs together lightly, letting their blood mingle.  They both felt a sudden electric jolt, but Nenai smiled reassuringly at her new husband.

"The bond is true," she said softly.  "Can you feel the song of our blood joined together?"

Vejiita felt a fleeting annoyance at her mystic way of talking, but he knew what she was talking about: a sudden warmth filling him, as if all of his blood had grown hot.

"Yes...I feel it..."  He kissed her gently, bringing on another wave of odd, but pleasant, sensations, but they were interrupted by sudden gasps from the other Saiyajin.  Nenai pulled away from him slightly and stared at something behind him.  Thinking someone had come to crash the wedding (perhaps Zarbon protesting? Ha!), Vejiita whirled angrily, but the snarl fell off of his face.

"Nanyatenei!"  Nenai dropped into a graceful curtsy, her hair brushing the ground.

Indeed, the girl's demon stood between the couple and the other Saiyajin, smiling benignly upon the newlyweds.

Vejiita's first confused thought was that Nenai was perpetrating some sort of weird hoax.  But the demon's ice-blue eyes looked too clearly into his heart to not be real.

*I am just as real as you,* the honeyed voice said in his mind, sounding amused.

Stunned, the admiral dropped to one knee next to Nenai, who was gazing raptly at Nanyatenei.

*A blessing upon this union,* the demon said, addressing everyone present.  *Know that the Kilisan still hold you in favor, Nenais'u.*  He stepped forward and laid his fingers upon the marriage pendant at Nenai's throat.  *As long as your descendants wear this chain, all of the love of the Kilisan will be with them.*  The necklace glowed briefly, then dulled again.

The Saiyajin looked on in awed silence, unbroken by the tears running down the Amon girl's face.  "Thank you, my Lord Nanyatenei," she said in little more than a whisper.  "Truly, the protection of the Kilisan is the greatest gift we could receive."

Nanyatenei's smile faded for a moment as he looked at Nenai with an expression of resigned sadness.  No one else seemed to notice this but Vejiita, and it worried him suddenly.  What was going to happen to her?  Or was the demon simply sad at losing his priestess?

*Blessings upon your sons and daughters,* Nanyatenei said before slowly fading out of view.

Somewhat dazed, Vejiita rose to his feet and offered Nenai his hand.  Her face was radiant.

"You see, the gods--the Kilisan--are real!" she said to the assembled Saiyajin.  She clutched the pendant at her throat.  "Vejiita...a blessed union!  Everything is going to be well."

The admiral smiled and drew her close, but he had his own misgivings.  The demon was unhappy about something.  I'm not going to expect paradise...But if it comes, at least it will be a pleasant surprise.
